SEKALY, Ragi Henri, LCdr (ret’d) CD
(April 15, 1958 – September 26, 2016)
It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Ragi on Monday September 26, 2016, in his 59th year. Beloved son of Raymond Rafick and the late Simone Sekaly and brother of Gabriel; Ragi was the dear nephew of Jacqueline Bittar, cousin of Irene & Rene Arnolis, Guy & Cynthia Bittar and Rafick & Norma Sekaly. He will be missed by dear cousins Elie & Maureen Debbas and George & Hada Zaidan. Ragi leaves behind his soulmate Mary-Ann Holowachuk and her children, Andrew, Amy, Bobby, Brian, Todd and Tracy. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues in Canada and beyond.
As an army cadet growing up in Montreal with his brother Gabriel, Ragi’s taste for adventure was solidified and he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at HMCS Scotian on December 1, 1976. Working through the ranks, Ragi’s military career led him to many colourful adventures which he loved to share including sailing on the minesweepers, adventures ashore, and his time working with youth within the Katimavik program. In the early 1990’s, Ragi donned civilian dress working within the naval training system while remaining on the supplemental reserve list. During his almost 40 year career Ragi’s contribution to the Royal Canadian Navy has been monumental. It is reasonable to say that not a single sailor has gone through training without having been assisted by some project, trainer, simulator or database that Ragi was involved in, managed or helped develop. Ragi will be remembered for his love of science fiction, pranks, corny jokes, extraordinary skills on computers and devotion to his many friends and family. To say nothing of all things penguins.
A celebration of life will be held in the Upper Lounge at the CFB Esquimalt Wardroom in Victoria BC at 1100 on October 14, 2016 followed by an interment at sea. Those wishing to attend the celebration of life need to be seated by 1045.
A drop in visitation to celebrate Ragi’s memory with his family will be held in Toronto ON, Saturday October 22, 2016 between 1130 and 1400 at Delmanor Wynford (187 Wynford Drive).
A celebration will be also held in Ottawa at a later date.
Flowers gratefully declined, Ragi’s family welcome in tribute donations to Wounded Warriors Canada (http://woundedwarriors.ca/home/) or the Canadian Diabetes Association (http://www.diabetes.ca/.
